Chatakpur located at an altitude of almost 8000 feet is a small forest village behind the Sonada forest. This small village offers an exclusive and breath-taking view of the Kanchenjunga mountain range comparable to the view offered by the Tiger Hill in Darjeeling. This village came into prominence as the forest department of India started building cottages and tourist accommodations here.
To get here, you can take one of the following alternatives given below:
- By Train: The NJP Railway Station in Siliguri connects the city to several cities across India. If you are journeying from Kolkata, then get in the Darjeeling mail which arrives at 10:00 pm in Kolkata. Once you reach NJP Station, take a taxi ride to Chatakpur as described below.
- By Jeep/Taxi: Get in a taxi going towards Darjeeling. Soon while travelling through the Kurseong plains you will come across a small village called Dilaram. From Dilaram you have to take the road to the right which will lead you to Bagora. From Bagora, Chatakpur is about half an hour distance.
- By Plane: Bagdogra airport located at Siliguri is has several planes available offered by many airlines. Some of them are:
Air India and Jet Airways has flights from Delhi, Guwahati and Kolkata to Bagdogra available, Go Air has daily flights to and from Delhi and Spice Jet operates flights from Kolkata and Delhi.
Once you reach Bagdogra airport, you can take a taxi ride as described above.
Things to see in Chatakpur
View the Scenery:Â In south of the village about a hundred meters is the highest point of the village. It offers a breath-taking and stunning view of the Kanchanjunga mountain range and the plains of North Bengal.
Auspicious spot: If you walk through the village towards the east, you will come across a spot containing many prayer flags flying all around and incense sticks burning. This spot is considered as an auspicious spot by the villagers. Incidentally, this is also a natural spot for birding and bird watching.
